ה- VMA של MTV יהיו כנראה טקס הפרסים הראשון של 2020 שיתקיים עם הופעות לייב מאז פרוץ מגפת הקורונה. לרשימת הקטגוריות נוספו כמה קטגוריות חדשות שתואמות את הנחיות הריחוק החברתי- כמו הופעת הבידוד הטובה ביותר והקליפ הכי טוב שצולם בבידוד.
הטקס יתקיים ב- 30 באוגוסט, בשידור חי מניו- יורק בשעה שמונה בערב על פי השעון המזרחי. כדי לאפשר את ההופעות, החליטו ב- MTV לקיים את המופע בחוץ, בהשתתפות של קהל קטן או ללא קהל כלל. במקור אמור היה הטקס להתקיים במרכז ברקלייס, אך כאמור הוחלט לשנות את המיקום למספר מקומות ברחבי העיר.
בין המופיעים יהיו הזמרת דוג'ה קאט, ג'יי בלווין, להקת הפופ הקוריאנית BTS ועוד. הרשימה השלמה של ההופעות אמורה להתפרסם בקרוב. את הטקס ניתן יהיה לראות כמובן בערוץ MTV או בלייב סטרים באתר או באפליקציה של הערוץ.

מנחת הטקס של השנה תהיה השחקנית והזמרת קיקי פאלמר. בהודעה הרשמית נמסר מ- MTV: "אנחנו נרגשים לבשר שהמנחה של הטקס השנה תהיה קיקי פאלמר הכשרונית. קיקי היא כוח אנרגטי ואיום מרובע עם שנינות קומית שתהפוך את המופע של השנה לבלתי נשכח באמת." פאלמר עצמה שיתפה את החדשות באמצעות סרטון באינסטגרם שבה החזירה לחיים את דמותה מהתוכנית "טרו ג'קסון", בה כיכבה קיקי בערוץ ניקולודיאון.
אריאנה גרנדה וליידי גאגא מובילות ברשימת המועמדים עם תשע מועמדויות כל אחת, שבע מהן עבור שיתוף הפעולה שלהן- "Rain on Me". בין השאר הן מועמדות בקטגוריות- קליפ השנה, שיר השנה וכמובן שיתוף הפעולה של השנה. מאחוריהן ניצבת בילי אייליש ודה וויקנד עם שש מועמדויות, וטיילור סוויפט עם חמש. אחת מהמועמדויות של סוויפט היא עבור הבימוי של הקליפ לשיר שלה- "The man".
